THE LAND OF NOMADS
AFGHANISTAN
Afghan jewelry dates back to over 3000 years. These traditional jewels are worn by kuchi or Pakhtoon people - the nomadic gypsies from the mountainous regions of southern and eastern Afghanistan. The rich and fascinating history of this ancient tribe is reflected through exotic Afghan jewellery pieces that radiate tribal energy, exuberant colour and creative artistry.
Traditionally worn to adorn the body for momentous occasions including weddings, childbirth and tribal celebrations, Kuchi jewellery features elaborate antique jewellery designs including necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings handmade from beautiful old coins, tassels and beads.
THE BANJARAS
LAMBHANI
Originally from Marwar, this tribe is known as the ‘banjaras’ who move from one place to another, isolating and assimilating themselves. Historians believe the term, ‘Lambani’, is derived from ‘lavanah’, which means salt. This theory makes sense because the tribe is assumed to have been pastors or salt traders. It is said that they also traded wood, grains, pulses, and other products while moving from one place to another.
