Four decades of war and conflict have left people of Afghanistan unemployed, insecure and politically unstable leading to a massive migration from Afghanistan. More than 5 million people are estimated to be living in new and prolonged displacement, while more than 2.7 million people have been forced to leave the country to Iran, Pakistan or Europe where they are unwelcomed, seen as a burden and often ignored.
Many refugees have already tried going back — lured by promises of help and hope from the international community and from Afghan President Ashraf Ghani — only to find there was neither food nor shelter for them. Many also discovered they were no longer welcome in the villages they had left decades earlier.
